Let me start this off by saying that I have been kayaking for over a decade, from Colorado Whitewater, Calm Coastal rivers and ocean Ocean Touring. But this weekend, I tried paddleboarding, and I love it!
SUP, or Stand Up Paddle Boarding has been a hot trend in water sports for several years now. Why would standing on a big surfboard and paddling with a long paddle be going viral? Two weeks ago, my wife tried it for the first time, and I was in my kayak. It was a bit awkward with her being “up there” and me “down there” as we paddled together. This past weekend, I decided to pick one up and give it a try with her, and I have to say I had a blast! Here are just a few reasons why I think SUP is blowing up all around the world.

The vantage point of standing on the board allows you to see the sea-life in the water. We saw many different kinds of fish and lots of stingrays swimming all over the place, just doing their thing. The feeling of gliding across the water is a very peaceful zen relaxing meditation feeling that anyone can experience. Paddleboarding is a green sport, as there are no motors or no excessive noises to disturb nature, just a simple board and paddle.
Just add water. All you need to Stand Up Paddle is a body of water, any water. Lakes, oceans, rivers, any waterway is suitable for paddleboarding. SUP is social or not. You can have fun on your own or with a group. It is easy to talk and socialize while paddling with friends or family.

Downwind open ocean runs of many miles are becoming more and more popular. Daredevils are taking paddle boards down rivers, even into whitewater rapids. Paddleboard fishing is spreading along the coast and in inland lakes and rivers. Fitness workouts and yoga are being done on paddleboards.
